The predictions you see in each edition of “Where’s the Freight?” are based on real truck and load data from the Trucker Tools driver app and broker platforms. Using this data, we can predict with accuracy where trucks will be needed in the coming week and where demand for trucks will be low.
In today’s “Where’s the Freight?” you can see the impact that last week’s winter storms are having on freight markets, particularly across the South and Southeast. There’ll be high demand for trucks in several markets in Texas this week as a result of the storms in the region. Tucson, Ariz., Winnipeg, Manitoba (Canada), and Norfolk, Va., will be among the best reefer markets in the country in the coming week, while Fayetteville, Ark., makes its first appearance in our hot flatbed markets list. Where Demand Is Rising, Heating Up
- Expect high demand for flatbed this week in and out of Rapid City, S.D., Texarkana, Texas, Lubbock, Texas, and Southwest Ontario. Flatbed demand is expected to rise this week for Erie, Penn., and Fayetteville, Ark.
- Tucson, Ariz., will be the best reefer market in the country for truckers over the next five to seven days. Demand for reefer capacity will be rising this week for Winnipeg, Manitoba (Canada), and Norfolk, Va.
- Dry van demand will rise this week for Central Ontario (Canada).
Where Demand Is Falling, Cooling Off
- You can expect demand for flatbed capacity to fall this week for Jonesboro, Ark.
- Hartford, Conn., and Reno, Nev., will be two of the coldest reefer markets in the country in the coming week for truckers.
- Demand for power only capacity in and out of Brooklyn, N.Y., will be low over the next five to seven day period. You also can expect demand for power only capacity to fall this week for El Paso, Texas, and Jacksonville, Fla.
- Calgary, Alberta (Canada), and Huntington, W. Va., will be two of the coldest dry van markets for truckers and carriers this week.
Trucker Tools’ Market Insights
- Based on the today’s data from Trucker Tools’ software platforms, the five hottest markets for truckers over the next week will be Rapid City, S.D. (flatbed), Texarkana, Texas (flatbed), Lubbock, Texas (flatbed), Tucson, Ariz. (reefer), and Southwest Ontario (flatbed).
- Demand for flatbed capacity in and out of Rapid City, S.D., currently is four times as high as it was at this time last year.
- The Norfolk, Va., reefer market is projected to favor drivers and carriers this week by a ratio of nearly two to one.
- Last week, millions in Texas lost power and water due to record low temperatures and snow and ice. The storms also caused a 100-vehicle accident on I-35W.
- Post-storm recovery and repairs are likely driving the increased demand for flatbed capacity inbound to Texarkana, Texas, and Lubbock, Texas.
- On Saturday, FreightWaves reported that last week’s storms in Texas and a recent nor’easter in Pennsylvania and New Jersey caused many retailers to shut down their operations. These disruptions caused a decline in tender volumes and an increase in rejections.
FreightWaves: National Trends, Hot Lanes

In today’s Daily Outlook, FreightWaves reports that national outbound reefer tender rejection rates, which measure demand, hit nearly 47 percent over the weekend due to recent winter storms. If you have excess reefer capacity in the Chicago market, search the spot market for loads running Chicago to Cincinnati because reefer rejections rates in both locations are up. It’s also a good idea to target the Nashville to Jacksonville lane this week, as spot market rates into Jacksonville are expected to be strong. Expect rates to swing back in your favor for Phoenix to Chicago in the coming week and stay firm on rates since outbound tender rejections are rising in this lane.
