Knowing in advance where rates will be high over the next week can help you get your truck(s) into hot markets to capitalize on demand. That’s true whether you’re an owner operator or a trucking company. Trucker Tools’ Market Index Report does just that. Using the data from our broker software platforms and digital tools for drivers and carriers, we can accurately predict where you should go for the highest rates and demand and which markets you might want to avoid going into. In today’s Trucker Tools’ Market Index Report, you’ll see which markets will be hot or cold over the next five to seven days. You’ll also find out where rates and demand will be trending up or down in the next week.

Hottest Markets

  • These regions are considered the hottest markets for flatbed capacity for the next five to seven days: Rapid City, S.D.; Minot, N.D.; Texarkana, Texas; and New Castle, Del.
  • If you’re moving reefer, the Tucson, Ariz.; Winnipeg, Man. (Canada);and Yakima, Wash., areas remain hot for carriers and drivers and will continue to be so for the next week.
  • Demand and rates for power-only will be high for Twin Falls, Idaho, over the next week.
  • For other types of capacity (such as tanker, RGN and step-deck), rates and demand are trending up for Milwaukee, Wi., and Jackson, Miss.

Cooling Markets

  • Over the next five to seven days, demand for flatbed for Yakima, Wash., will be cooling slightly.
  • Today’s Market Index shows that demand and rates for reefer capacity in Hartford, Conn., and Las Vegas are cooling.
  • Rates for power-only will be falling in Jefferson City, Mo.
  • For other types of capacity (such as tanker, RGN and step-deck), rates and demand are trending down for Austin, Texas.

Trucker Tools’ Market Insights

  • Today’s Trucker Tools’ Market Index shows only very slight decreases in demand for reefer for Las Vegas and Hartford, Conn. Demand for reefer capacity remains high in most U.S. and Canadian markets.
  • Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine is now being delivered to locations across the country and Moderna’s vaccine likely will be approved by the FDA this week. Shipment of these vaccines to distro centers across the country may impact reefer capacity, since the vaccines must be stored at low temps.
  • Rapid City is home to Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota’s National Guard and Blattner Energy, a renewable energy contractor, which may explain high demand for flatbed capacity in the area.
  • Inbound and outbound reefer rates for Las Vegas continue to trend much lower than in previous years.

Today’s SONAR Insights

Trucker Tools is partnering with FreightWaves SONAR to give you even more information on hot and cold markets around the United States. In today’s SONAR Daily Watch, we see that heavy import volumes continue to come into West Coast ports. The bulk of that freight is coming from China and other East Asian countries into the Port of Los Angeles and will likely impact rates and demand into January.

Inbound freight volumes are high for the key distribution markets of Dallas, Chicago, Harrisburg, Indianapolis, Houston and Atlanta. SONAR also is reporting that dry van and reefer rates went down last week due to the Thanksgiving holiday the week before, but they likely won’t stay there. The national outbound tender rejection rate remains high at approximately 25 percent. As unemployment increases and a relief bill stalls in Congress, consumer demand may decrease significantly after the holidays.

SONAR’s Hot Lanes

Spot market reefer outbound rejection rates for Chicago to Indianapolis are at 36 percent, making it a hot market for drivers and carriers. SONAR also is reporting that spot market rates for Cleveland to Dallas remain strong, but may be loosening in the near future.
