When you think about hiring and keeping employees in your freight brokerage or logistics business, your first thoughts may be about salary, remote work options or benefits. What you may not realize is that the technology you use in your operations is heavily influencing whether that candidate accepts your offer or not and if a hiree chooses to stay with your company for the long-term. According to research conducted by Deloitte, Millennials (born between 1980 and 2000) will make up 75 percent of the workforce by 2025, which is just two years away. Millennial employees (and Gen Z workers) have grown up using technology in their everyday lives and expect that you as an employer will use the same type of API-based time and money-saving technologies they have become accustomed to in their lives as consumers.
“As we’re moving through this journey, we see more and more demand for technology from our customers and our carriers, but the first piece of it for me is really how it helps our people,” C.L. Services’ President and CEO Jeff Lantz shared in a webinar with Trucker Tools. “We want technology to make our employees’ lives easier because there’s nothing that I hate worse than seeing somebody sitting here working until 8 p.m. at night when I’m walking out the door. The whole goal for our company, our people and our culture is to make this job as much fun as possible — and it can be very fun. I look at technology as a huge stress reliever for people. Once you get them on board with it and they understand it, they’re not as stressed out. Then they will do a much better job of servicing our customers and servicing our carriers.”
“If you know anyone that’s ever been in a 3PL or that’s worked on the carrier side of the business, you know that it’s a difficult job,” says BlueGrace Logistics’ Chief Operating Officer Mark Ford. “If you don’t show your internal teams that you’re working on making their jobs more enjoyable, your relationships aren’t going to matter. If you’re just focused on external relationships, but you’re not doing anything internally to supplement that and give your internal people the ability to take advantage of some of those technological resources, then they’re going to have a hard time facilitating relationships with carriers on their side.”
“Technology has become completely unified into the everyday life of Millennials,” writes Jeff York in “The Millennial Expectation of Technology in the Workplace” for Forbes. “They no longer ask for sufficient technology at their jobs; they expect it. Often, this expectancy has been painted as entitlement, but what millennial workers really want are the tools they need to do their job efficiently.”
One effective way to differentiate yourself from your competitors when it comes to recruitment and retention is to implement efficiency-boosting technology in your operations. When interviewing prospective candidates, be sure to highlight the real-time technology you use around load tracking, matching and booking.
