Where’s the Freight? Edmonton, Southwestern Ontario, Texarkana and Springfield Top Markets for Truckers/Carriers

Happy Friday, all. It’s time for your end-of-week edition of “Where’s the Freight?,” Trucker Tools’ free freight forecast for owner operators and carriers that tells you where you can expect demand for capacity to be high and low in the coming week.
Hurricane Ida, which made landfall on Sunday, has left a path of destruction in its wake from Louisiana to Massachusetts. As of this morning, more than 800,000 people in Louisiana are still without power due to the hurricane. Several ports including the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port, Port Fourchon, the Port of Houma and Southwest Pass, as well as segments of the Mississippi River remain closed to traffic. If you’re traveling in areas affected by the hurricane, please drive safe, truckers!
In this Friday edition of “Where’s the Freight?,” you’ll notice that Texarkana, Texas, appears not once, but twice in today’s Top Five Hottest Markets list. In the coming week, you can expect to see high demand for capacity in two key Canadian markets, while demand for power only capacity is projected to fall in several Southeastern U.S. markets.

Where Demand for Capacity Is Projected To Be High or Increasing
Southwestern Ontario and Texarkana, Texas, likely will be the highest demand/highest rate flatbed markets in North America over the next five to seven days.
You’ll want to target reefer loads inbound to and outbound from Edmonton, Alberta, and Texarkana, Texas, this week, as these are projected to be the highest demand/highest rate reefermarkets in North America. Demand for reefer is expected to rise this week to/from Dodge City, Kan.
The top power only market this week will be Springfield, Mass. You can expect power only demand to increase this week for New Castle, Del., Detroit, Stockton, Calif., and Tallahassee, Fla.
Where Demand for Capacity Is Projected To Be Low or Decreasing
Yakima, Wash., and Fargo, N.D., will be the lowest demand flatbed markets in North America this week.
Demand/rates for reefer capacity inbound to and outbound from Billings, Mont., and Hartford, Conn., will be low over the next five to seven day period.
New Orleans will see extremely low demand for power only capacity this week. Demand for power only capacity will decline in the coming week for Huntington, W. Va., Norfolk, Va., and Decatur, Ala.
Trucker Tools’ Market Insights
According to the latest data from Trucker Tools’ platforms, these will be the fivebest markets for truckers this week: 1. Edmonton, Alberta (reefer), 2. Southwestern Ontario (flatbed), 3. Texarkana, Texas (flatbed), 4. Springfield, Mass. (power only), and 5. Texarkana, Texas (reefer).
The five worst markets for truckers will be: 1. Billings, Mont. (reefer), 2. Yakima, Wash. (flatbed), 3. Hartford, Conn. (reefer), 4. Fargo, N.D. (flatbed), and 5. New Orleans (power only).
FreightWaves is reporting in its most recent Daily Market Update that national outbound tender rejections are up today and that national outbound volumes are down.
This week demand for power only capacity inbound to and outbound from Springfield, Mass., is projected to be eight times higher than it was during the same week in 2020.
According to Wednesday’s USDA Specialty Crops National Truck Rate Report, currently there are capacity shortages in the following areas: San Luis Valley in Colorado, Delaware, Maryland, Eastern Shore Virginia, Southwestern Indiana, Southeastern Illinois, Southeastern Missouri, Eastern North Carolina and Central Wisconsin.
